Explanation

If you encounter this error when creating a new database, /etc/hosts may not be configured properly.

Workaround

See Configure Hostname Resolution in the Installation Guide.
Do not use the loopback address or associated hostname.
Check /opt/vertica/config/dbname.conf for unknown. This means Vertica cannot resolve the hostname.
