install the Vertica rpm package
rpm is a powerful package manager, which can be used to build, install, query, verify, update, and erase individual software packages. A package consists of an archive of files and meta-data used to install and erase the archive files. The meta-data includes helper scripts, file attributes, and descriptive information about the package. Packages come in two varieties: binary packages, used to encapsulate software to be installed, and source packages, containing the source code and recipe necessary to produce binary packages.
configure a cluster using install_vertica, a powerful shell script provided by Verticathat configures a cluster of hosts that can be used to create a database. The script does a number of checks to catch common Linux misconfigurations. It checks the connectivity and bandwidth characteristics of the communication links among the cluster machines and verifies other pre-requisites.
A cluster generally refers a collection of hosts or a collection of nodes bound to a database. A cluster is not part of a database definition and thus does not have a name.

You must be logged in as root to use install_vertica and you must run install_vertica for all installations, including upgrades and single-node installations.

This section describes how to install your license key. The other procedures do not apply to all applications of Vertica and are optional.
